Blue Grass Community Foundation to host free community screening of Lexington: Resilience in the Redline at theKentucky Theatre on August 26
In honor of Black Philanthropy Month, Blue Grass Community Foundation invites the public to a free community screening of Lexington: Resilience in the Redline, a feature-length documentary from Black Yarn, on Tuesday, Aug. 26 from 7-8:30pm at the Kentucky Theatre. Admission is free, but registration is required. All attendees will receive complimentary popcorn or candy and a non-alcoholic beverage with their ticket.
Lexington: Resilience in the Redline is a powerful exploration of how systemic racism shaped Lexington’s neighborhoods, economy and sense of community. Through vivid storytelling, personal narratives, data and archival footage, the film reveals:
- The untold story of Black hamlets that emerged after the Civil War and laid the foundation for Black land ownership in Lexington
- The rise of thriving Black neighborhoods full of educators, entrepreneurs and civic leaders whose contributions have long been overlooked
- How policies like redlining, discriminatory banking practices and urban renewal devastated once-vibrant communities and widened the racial wealth gap
- Why these historical injustices still shape who owns land and builds wealth in Lexington today
- And how a new generation of leaders and organizations is reclaiming that narrative, working to expand homeownership, build intergenerational wealth and uplift Black identity and community
“Understanding our city’s history of economic injustice and uplifting the voices of those who have persevered helps our whole community move forward, together,” said Lisa Adkins, president/CEO of Blue Grass Community Foundation. “We’re proud to host this screening during Black Philanthropy Month as a way to honor Black stories, celebrate community resilience and inspire reflection and action.”
This event reflects Blue Grass Community Foundation’s ongoing commitment to increasing access to opportunity and building stronger, more connected communities across Central and Appalachia Kentucky.
