Longtime advocate for rural Kentucky and media equity to lead growing regional initiative for local news and civic engagement

Nov. 3, 2025 (LEXINGTON, Ky.)—Blue Grass Community Foundation (BGCF) is pleased to announce Melissa Newman, PhD, has been named executive director of Press Forward Blue Grass. Melissa previously served part-time as strategy advisor to the initiative and now steps into a full-time leadership role to guide its continued growth and impact across Central and Appalachia Kentucky.

Press Forward Blue Grass is part of the national Press Forward movement to strengthen local journalism, close gaps in news coverage and expand access to trusted information. As one of 31 local chapters across the country, Press Forward Blue Grass is focused on building a stronger civic infrastructure by investing in community-centered news and information.

“Melissa brings decades of experience in journalism, rural advocacy and strategic partnerships,” said BGCF President/CEO Lisa Adkins. “We’re thrilled for her to lead this important work full time and accelerate our progress in building a healthier, more connected information ecosystem for our region.”

Melissa is a former journalist, communications professor and Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) with deep roots in Kentucky’s Appalachian communities. Her academic research focuses on media representation of poverty and Appalachia, and how changing the narrative can lead to stronger communities and economies.

“I’ve seen firsthand how the loss of local news harms civic participation and public trust,” said Melissa. “Press Forward Blue Grass is about meeting that challenge head-on. I’m honored to lead this work full time and help ensure every community has access to reliable, relevant information that supports its people and future.”
