Giving day supports Black-serving nonprofits in Fayette County

Blue Grass Community Foundation and the Lexington Black Prosperity Initiative are excited to announce that registration is now open for Give 8/28 Lex 2026, a celebration of Black philanthropy and support of Black-serving nonprofits in Fayette County.

Scheduled for Friday, August 28, this special giving day aligns with the global Black Philanthropy Month movement and the national Give 8/28 campaign, which honors the legacy of Black generosity and encourages giving to Black-serving organizations on a date that holds deep significance in Black history.

The 2025 Give 8/28 Lex campaign raised $234,956 for 40 Black-serving nonprofits across Fayette County, supporting work in youth development, education, food justice, housing, public health and community safety, with more than $100,000 in matching funds and prizes increasing the impact of every gift. Participation doubled from 26 nonprofits in 2024 to 40 in 2025, and total dollars raised grew from $120,000 to nearly $235,000.

“While Black Americans give a greater share of their wealth to charity than any other racial group—contributing an estimated $11 billion annually—Black- and BIPOC-serving nonprofits still receive less than 4% of total U.S. charitable giving,” said Alison Jackson, associate director of board and community engagement at Blue Grass Community Foundation. “That’s why we’re hosting Give 8/28 Lex: to shine a light on local Black-serving organizations and connect them with the community support they deserve.”

Give 8/28 Lex focuses on grassroots, community-based nonprofits that serve Black communities and operate with close ties to the people they support. The giving day platform helps increase visibility, expand donor reach and strengthen long-term sustainability.

Eligible Black-serving nonprofits may register at bgcf.org/give828lex. The site includes eligibility guidelines, key dates and campaign details.
