Give 8/28 Lex Returns August 28 to Celebrate Black Philanthropy and Support Black-Serving Nonprofits
The Lexington Black Prosperity Initiative (LBPI), a community-advised committee of Blue Grass Community Foundation, is excited to announce the return of its signature giving event – now reimagined as Give 8/28 Lex.
This online giving campaign will take place on Thursday, August 28, inspired by the global success of Black Philanthropy Month and the national Give 8/28 movement celebrating Black giving and aligning with significant moments in Black history that occurred on August 28. Locally, the day is dedicated to uplifting Black-serving nonprofits and galvanizing community support for organizations that are making a lasting impact in Lexington. This year, generous matching opportunities and prizes totaling more than $100,000 will amplify donations.
“Give 8/28 Lex is a celebration of our community’s collective generosity and the incredible work of Lexington’s Black-serving nonprofits,” said Christian Motley, chair of the Lexington Black Prosperity Initiative. “LBPI is proud to provide a platform for our community to come together in support of 37 participating nonprofits. Your donations on 8/28 will impact lives and contribute to a stronger, more prosperous Lexington where everyone can thrive.”
Last year’s campaign raised more than $120,000 for 26 organizations through more than 600 gifts. The 2025 fundraiser is building on that momentum, with more match funds and more nonprofits signed up to participate.

Give 8/28 Lex is rooted in a powerful legacy. According to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Black households donate a higher percentage of their discretionary income to charity than any other racial group in the United States, contributing an estimated $11 billion annually. Yet, research shows that less than 4% of all U.S. philanthropic dollars are directed to BIPOC-serving organizations, a gap that LBPI seeks to close through initiatives like Give 8/28 Lex.
